World
Book Day, held each year, is a worldwide celebration of books and
reading. Booksellers support the event so that all school-age pupils
receive a £1 token to put towards a book or storytape of their choice
or to purchase one of the special World Book Day £1 titles. Many
events take place in bookshops and libraries to promote the date,
and support is increasing every year.
Events in Pembroke School:
An exciting week packed with activities, displays and competitions
takes place here in school, past events including a Jacqueline Wilson
evening, treasure hunts, and staff storytelling sessions. The whole
school - staff and pupils - enjoys a rare few moments when they
stop and read for 10 minutes - sharing their own choice of story,
information book or magazine.
The 2001 World Book Day (and this year, St David's Day) celebrations
included a Spooky Storytelling when, with the lights
low and blinds drawn, pupils shared their own spooky stories and
heard some local ghostly tales. Mrs Jones and her GNVQ Art students
created a wonderful Book Tree outside the Library,
to which pupils added their book review leaves, sharing views
about books they have read with others. Three pupil library assistants
created their own St David's Day Quiz, marking
the double celebration.
